History of the 407 area code
The 407 area code (USA) was created in 1988 as an independent, split code from area code 305. Initially, the 407 area code is not only included in most of the Central Florida region but also the Treasure Coast and Palm Beaches. In 1996, Martin, Palm Beach, Indian River, and St. Lucie counties were divided from the 407 area code to form the new, 561 area code. The newly created 561 area code has since independent forming area code known by 772.
Recently, in October 2000, Brevard County was split off as the 321 area code. At the same time, Osceola, Orange, and Seminole counties were overlaid under the newly founded 321 area code. Some of the small parts of Volusia County that were situated in 407 (i.e., throughout the Deltona area) continued to use only the 407 area code.
Back in 2003, it was known that all new mobile, telephone, and cell phone numbers in the three counties would no longer use or be issued under the 321 area code, although then the 321 numbers in the Orlando metro area would maintain and use that area code. In 2001, the Deltona region was switched right to the 386 area code when the 386 code was split from the 904 area code. Hence, all of the 407 area code is now overlaid with the area codes of 321 and 689. The 689 area code has been assigned as an overlay of the 407 (Note: but not the standalone the 321 area code), from the beginning in June 2019. That Assignments in the 321 area code remain frozen and principally focus on Brevard County.
